Bringing the Internet into education

The Provision to All Russian Schools of Access to the Internet

The implementation of a wide-scale program to connect all the general education institutions of Russia to the Internet started in September 2006. Every day, 150 to 300 Russian schools are connected to the worldwide web. Within the Priority national Project 'Education', before the end of 2007, wide-band Internet access will be provided to all general education institutions in Russia.

The principal task of this area of focus of the national Project is not so much the connection of the schools to the Internet, as the provision of access to schoolchildren and their teachers all over Russia to modern informational educational resources. Having created access to a 'virtual space' available for children at school, society is providing equal opportunities for all children. Moreover, with the creation of free access to the Internet network at school, new unique opportunities arise for teachers in respect to improving their personal level, and the search and use of new teaching methods and tools in the educational process, as well as additional educational and visual aids; thus leading to a significant growth in the accessibility of higher quality education. Electronic libraries, modern educational resources, science and technology news - this is just a short list of the opportunities which open up for Russian schoolchildren.

In accordance with the List of general education institutions to be connected to the Internet, along with the secondary general education institutions, within the National Project the access to the Internet will be provided to pre-school and primary school education institutions, boarding schools, educational health centers, children's homes, special educational institutions for children and teenagers with deviant behavior, corrective schools, boarding schools which offer primary flying training as well as evening (shift) educational institutions.

At the same time, there should be space in the life of children for something else. Through the Internet children may communicate, make new friends and get to know new musical trends. In October 2006, the MES of Russia announced the launch of the informational project named 'Ask your question everywhere!' Its goal was to show the schoolchildren who were getting acquainted with worldwide web for the first time the capabilities of the Internet, to teach them how to orientate in the boundless expanse of the worldwide network. Within this informational project regular Internet-conferences are held on the 'Big Intermission' for schoolchildren who have obtained access to the network. Prominent people from cinema, literature, science and education answer questions from children and teenagers.
