The Year of Teacher reached the North Pole
Seven young polar explorers and their teachers Matvei Shparo and Boris Smolin set the flag of the Year of Teacher up the North Pole and came back to Moscow.
The team started on April, 16, from the Russian floating station "Barneo". After passing 110 kilometers in 6 days, the polar explorers set up the following flags on the North Pole: the Russian tricolor, flags of the places they are from - Komsomolsk-on-Amur and Moscow, Chuvashia Republic and Republic of Mordovia, Vologda, Kaluga and Penza regions. Also there appeared flags of the Year of Teacher and "Sochi-2014".
The candidates to the team passed a strict contest selection: besides the filling in the form, they had to necessarily take part in the regional competitions "Ski-track of Russia" or similar large ski competitions.
More than 50 applications from seventeen regions were received at the contest. Among them for training and final selection, which took place in Karelia, 40 candidates were chosen. Seven of them became winners and received the right to participate in the expedition.
The first youth polar expedition took place in the spring of 2008 and was dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the North Pole discovery. The polar expedition in question has become the third.
